Hoon Kim is a Korean-born artist whose practice has developed in New York over the past two decades. He moved to New York in 1997 and received his MFA from the School of Visual Arts, where he developed his practice through installation and material-based work. During his graduate studies, Kim received a commission from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC).

Following years of experimentation with materials and fabrication processes, Kim founded Studio HK in 2008. Since then, he has worked directly with an extensive range of materials, developing an intimate understanding of how materials behave through making, manipulation, failure, and transformation.

Through this experience, Kim began to understand surface through three interconnected territories: Soft, Hard, and Digital.

Soft explores materials that are light, flexible, and responsive. Hard engages materials defined by density, weight, structure, and resistance. Digital extends this investigation through processes such as 3D printing, CNC carving, and digital printing, where information is translated into physical form.

Kim approaches surface as a material condition—a place where process, structure, technology, and the hand intersect.

His current practice exists at the intersection of these territories, where material, technology, form, and space continually reshape one another.
